HISTORY OF THE SCHEME

When all the redevelopment of the offices took place on the Upper Richmond Road businesses reported the daytime economy really missed the approximately 700 office workers who had left the area. Purchasers of all the flats built didn't necessarily live here, or shop locally. They also reported residents were pretty ignorant of shops eg if they lived south of the URR they quite likely didn't know what shops there were on LRR and vice versa.

In a small way the Putney Society is trying to help. To try to encourage our members to shop locally we set up the Putney Society Independent Trader's Discount Scheme. Prior to the pandemic we had some 65 businesses signed up, which was quite impressive. Sadly, and quite shockingly, over the various lockdowns nearly half those businesses closed. We resurrected the scheme last year, and are gradually building the numbers up again.

Each business offers whatever incentive they want to offer, subject to change and at the owner's discretion. You need to be a member of the Society to take part and MUST show your membership card prior to purchase. A lot of people say they don't actually use their card, but have learned about businesses they weren't aware of and shop there specifically because of the scheme. No one wants to take advantage of shop keepers in these tough times, but likewise they're happy if it brings new and repeat customers. See the link to the list of businesses currently signed up. Each business that is part of the scheme should have a sticker in their window/doorway indicating that they are part of it.
