Who manages our open spaces?

Parks owned by Wandsworth Council

The management of parks owned by Wandsworth Council is contracted out to Enable, a not-for-profit organisation, working in partnership with the Council.  Within the SW15 area these parks include:

Wandsworth Park

Grade II listed Edwardian park laid out with ornamental shrubberies and sports areas, blends formality with informality. Magnificent avenue of London planes provides shade and a view of the wide-open river - opportunity to watch sports, birds and passing boats. By the play area and café is a putting green.  The Friends of Wandsworth Park play an active part in its management and maintain a quiet riverside garden at the western end of the Park.

Leader’s gardens

Riverside park on the Putney embankment, busy with walkers, cyclists and rowers. Café, tennis courts and play areas, shady trees and views across the Thames. The Beverley Brook enters the big river nearby, overlooked by a quiet lawn and sitting out area.

Old Burial Ground

Historic burial ground for Putney dating from 18th Century, several listed tombs and a small mortuary building (not in use). Mature London plane trees and winding pathways add to the quiet restful calm. The park provides green respite from the nearby busy shopping streets and traffic.

 Putney Park Lane

Historic country lane connecting Upper Richmond Road to Putney Heath. A traffic-free thoroughfare, surfaced with rough gravel, lined with a variety of mature and shady trees, the Lane runs alongside the 1920s Dover House Estate for part of its route, and is otherwise backed by garden fences. Roughly two thirds along the Lane is the wide green park known as The Pleasance.

Enable is also responsible for street trees and local cemeteries, including Putney Vale and the old cemetery on Putney Common.

Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Commons

Wimbledon and Putney Commons are 1,140 acres of countryside (about 60% of which lies in Putney and Roehampton) amidst the urban surroundings of Wimbledon, Putney and Kingston-upon-Thames.

Established by an Act of Parliament in 1871, the Commons are run by a charity, Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators, the commons are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. The Commons provide an important home for wildlife.

Green spaces on Wandsworth Council owned housing estates

In Putney and Roehampton these areas include Alton Estate, Lennox Estate, Ashburton Estate, Dover House Road Estate and Horne Way Estate. The open spaces are managed by the Western Area Housing Team together with Enable who look after trees on the estates.
